Crochet Lovely Heart Hat

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

I know, I know...we just celebrated Christmas and it's only January! But Valentine's Day is next month and I wanted to share with you all the Crochet Lovely Heart Hat I created last year. My daughters Coreena and Kendall helped my out by modeling the hat for me. This pattern is super easy and whips up pretty quickly. So here's the free pattern, hope you enjoy!!

Materials:

Hook size: I

Yarn: Caron One Pound “off white” and “claret”

Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

Yarn Over: YO

Chain: Ch

Single Crochet: SC

Half Double Crochet: HDC

Slip Stitch: sl st

Bobble Stitch: BCS

Note: This pattern is sized to fit a child. To make bigger or smaller you will need a multiple of 6 stitches plus one more.

How to make Bobble Crochet Stitch (BCS)

Note: The 1st and only BCS of the heart stitch row will contain 2 DCs because the Ch 2 counts as the 1st BS DC. All the other BCS in the heart stitch round will contain 3 DCs.

YO, insert hook through stitch, YO, pull up loop, YO again and pull through 2 loops, now there are 2 loops on your hook, YO again and pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on the hook, YO again and pull through 2 loops, 4 loops on hook, YO again and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

Brim:

With the off white yarn Ch 15

Row 1: HDC in 2nd Ch from the hook, repeat across row (14 HDC)

Row 2: HDC in 2 front loops, repeat across row (14 HDC)

Note: Continue row 2 until the length of the brim equals 18 inches, sl st the ends of the brim together, Ch 1. At this time your brim is “inside-out,” flip it “outside-right.”

Also, the brim is made wider so you are able to roll brim up. Because I did not want the brim to unroll, I sewed it to stay with a running stitch. You can also make the width of the brim smaller by only chaining 8.

Hat Body:

Note: At the end of every round you will join and chain 1, except for round 3...you will join and chain 2 instead. Also, where you join and Ch, this will be where you will crochet your first stitch (for every round).

Round 1: HDC evenly around brim of the hat totaling (67 HDC)

Round 2: HDC in the 3rd HDC loop around (67 HDC)

Round 3: SC around (67 SC)

Round 4: Switch to claret yarn, this is where you will start the Heart Stitch. In the same stitch as the join and Ch 2 BCS containing 2 DCs (the Ch 2 counts as the first DC in the BCS), Ch 2, sk next 5 stitches, *in next stitch BCS containing 3 DCs, Ch 1, BS containing 3 DCs in same stitch* (continue around, you will have a total of 2 half hearts and 10 full hearts.) in last stitch BCS containing 3 DCs, join to the first half heart at start of round, Ch 1

Round 5: Switch back to off white yarn, SC in 1st stitch, *SC in the 3 middle stitches of the skipped 5 stitches from round 4, SC in the Ch 1 space of the heart*, at the end of the round SC in the last 3 middle stitches from the skipped 5 stitches, join, Ch 1 (45 SC)

Round 6: HDC, 2HDC, HDC, HDC, *2HDC, 2HDC, HDC, HDC*, last 3 stitches HDC, HDC, 2HDC, join, Ch1 (67 HDC)

Round 7: HDC in 3rd HDC loop around (67 HDC)

Round 8: SC around (67 SC)

Round 9: HDC around (67 HDC)

Round 10: HDC in 3rd HDC loop around (67 HDC)

Note: In rounds 11 and 13 all knit stitches are crocheted using the claret yarn or your other color yarn)

Round 11: *SC in next 3 stitches, with claret yarn Knit stitch* continue around, join, Ch 1 (67 stitches)

Round 12: HDC around (67 HDC)

Round 13: SC next 2 stitches, knit stitch with claret yarn, *SC next 3 stitches, knit stitch* SC in last stitch in round. (67 stitches)

Round 14: HDC around (67 HDC)

Rounds 15-20: repeat rounds 7-9 2 times, tie off and weave in ends.

Closing Hat Top: Cut a 12 inch piece of off white yarn. Flip hat inside-out. Sew around the top of the hat in the HDC round using a running stitch, pull yarn tight together and knot securely, weave in ends.

Pom Pom:

To add the finishing touch make a red pom pom and sew it on to the top of the hat. I use the blue Clover pom pom maker. I bought it right at the local Michael’s store.
